Botox (Botulinum Toxin) Information For Patients
What Does Botox Treat?
Botulinum toxin is used to prevent the wrinkles that form with repeated facial expressions (the “movement lines”) by temporarily weakening the muscles responsible for those expressions It can also soften fine wrinkles that are present at rest but should not be expected to teat deep wrinkles that are present at rest (the “at rest lines”).
What Can I Expect At My Botox Treatment?
Botulinum toxin injection is a fairly quick and easy procedure done in the office with no downtime. It consists of multiple small injections using a fine needle into targeted muscles on the face or neck. Mild pain with the injections, pinprick bleeding and mild temporary swelling are to be expected with the procedure and will resolve within 30 minutes. You will start to see the effects of botulinum toxin in about 3 days however please allow 2 weeks to see the full benefit. It will last anywhere from 3-6 months (every patient is different!)
Are There Risks to Botox?
Some patients have experienced the following:
- Pain during injection
- Mild bruising
- Headache
- Unexpected risks include heavy eyebrows or eyelid, uneven facial expression, flu-like symptoms, or infection
Post-Treatment Care:
Do not lie down, exercise, or do activities where the face is in a dependent position (like yoga) for 4 hours after the procedure.
How Much Does Botox Cost?
Medical insurances do not cover botulinum toxin injections for cosmetic purposes In our clinic, botulinum toxin is priced by area: glabella (11 lines), crows feet, and forehead are each considered one area.
