Proper care after a punch biopsy is vital to support healing and minimize complications. Below, you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about post-procedure care. General Aftercare
After your procedure, a dressing will be applied to the area to protect it and promote healing. Keep this dressing in place for 24 hours and avoid getting the area wet during this time. Mild redness and swelling around the site are normal and should subside within a few days.
To clean the site properly, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Remove the old dressing and gently cleanse the area with warm water and soap. If the biopsy is on your scalp, you may use your regular shampoo. Avoid scrubbing.
- Use a Q-tip with hydrogen peroxide to gently remove any crusting or old ointment, if needed.
- Rinse the site well and pat it dry with clean gauze or a tissue.
Apply a thick layer of Vaseline or Aquaphor to keep the site moist and support healing. Cover the area with an adhesive bandage, such as a Band-Aid, or a non-stick pad secured with tape.
You should avoid baths, hot tubs, and swimming for at least seven days after your biopsy. These activities can expose the wound to excess moisture, increasing the risk of infection. If you have specific activities in mind, contact us for personalized advice.
Caring for Sutures
Not all punch biopsy sites need sutures, but if sutures are used, they play an important role in wound closure and healing. Our team will advise you on whether sutures are necessary based on the biopsy site and size.
After the first 24 hours, it’s safe to clean the site with the same instructions provided above. Clean gently around the sutures, avoiding excessive pulling or rubbing. Keep the area moist with ointment and covered with a bandage.
- Sutures on the face, scalp, or neck are typically removed in about 7 days.
- Sutures on other parts of the body may be removed approximately 14 days after surgery.

If a suture falls out on its own before your follow-up appointment, don’t worry. This can happen as part of the healing process. However, if you’re concerned about wound closure, please call our office for advice.
Healing and Potential Complications
Healing timelines can vary depending on the biopsy site and size, as well as individual factors such as skin type and overall health. Most patients see noticeable healing within 1-3 weeks. Consult our team if your healing seems delayed or unusual.
Some bleeding may occur after the biopsy. Use clean gauze to apply firm, direct pressure to the wound for 10-20 minutes. If bleeding doesn’t stop after 15 minutes of firm pressure, contact our office immediately.
Signs of infection can include extensive redness, swelling, significant pain, or yellow drainage. If any of these occur, call us immediately to address the issue and receive the appropriate care.
Additional Post-Procedure Tips
Once the site is fully healed, practicing good sun protection is key to reducing discoloration and scarring. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure. For sunscreen recommendations tailored to your skin type, consult our team.
It’s best to avoid makeup on the healing site until the skin has completely closed and healed. Applying makeup too soon may interfere with the recovery process.
Follow-ups are often recommended to assess healing or remove sutures. If you have any concerns about the site or your recovery, we encourage you to schedule an appointment sooner.
