Fraxel Laser Therapy at DermWellesley
Fraxel® is one of the best, most current, and effective lasers to help to you look and feel your best. The Fraxel Dual technology that is utilized at DermWellesley targets sun-damaged and aging skin by creating microscopic laser columns that penetrate into the skin to help promote collagen remodeling. Because it only treats a “fraction” of tissue at a time, the surrounding skin is left intact and therefore recovery is usually quick (a few days). Fraxel Dual resurfaces your skin by stimulating the growth of new, healthy skin cells from the inside out.
We will evaluate your skin and your cosmetic goals and can discuss whether we want to target pigment/ sun damage, wrinkles/ texture, or both. Please note that multiple treatments may be needed.

- Fine lines and wrinkles (improves tone, and texture and generates smoother, fresher looking skin)
- Surface scarring
- Pigmentation (brown spots, age spots)
- Sun damage
- Actinic keratoses
Fraxel DUAL 1550/1927 laser treatment targets aging, scarring, and sun-damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into your skin to expedite your body’s remodeling of collagen. And since the laser treats only a fraction of tissue at a time, it leaves the surrounding tissue intact, which promotes very rapid healing. Fraxel DUAL 1550/1927 treatment resurfaces your skin by stimulating the growth of new, healthy skin cells from the inside out.
Fraxel Dual 1550/1927 is FDA approved to treat the following problems:
- Wrinkles around the eyes (periorbital wrinkles)
- Acne scars
- Surgical scars
- Age spots/sunspots (pigmented lesions)
- Melasma (irregular patches of brown skin on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip and nose)
- Actinic Keratoses (skin condition)
- Skin resurfacing
You will be asked to arrive approximately 1 hour prior to your appointment for your medical provider to apply a numbing agent which will help make the procedure very comfortable. The laser treatment itself will be about 20 minutes. Most patients describe an increased sensation of heat during the treatment. After the treatment, most patients feel like they have a sunburn, which usually diminishes in 1 to 3 hours.
Clinical studies suggest that on average, an effective treatment regimen is between 2 to 5 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart. Depending on your condition and schedule, you and your physician may choose to space treatment sessions further apart. Results are immediate and progressive, with optimal improvement usually visible in 2 to 3 months. This time frame and treatment structure allow for healing and the production of new collagen to replace damaged tissue.
To prepare for your fraxel treatment, please avoid excessive sun exposure beginning approximately 1 month before treatment. For maximum improvement, we ask that you also avoid the sun for 1 month after treatment. If you have a history of cold sores, please make your provider aware. It may be recommended that you take a cold sore medication prior to the appointment to minimize a a flare.
You should NOT get Fraxel if you have a history of:
- Keloid formation or excessive scarring
- Are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
